Maritime Cargo Transportation, is compared to all other means of cargo transport, be it cargo train, transportation by truck or by plane, the most efficient and measured at the emitted GHG per ton times kilometer, the cleanest way of transportation.
At the same time shipping industry is responsible for at least 2,7% of all global GHG-emissions, 4% SO_x and 7% of NO_x emissions (2005). Furthermore shipping industry is identified to be one of fastest growing emission sources in the European Union (2008).
Without any means to steer against this trend, shipping will soon outrank all other emission sources and will be the sole dominant pollutant to global GHG-emissions.
